Is the best coaching move just… moving?

Coach Walking, the power move in coaching.

At and. we have been using coach walking for over 20 years. It is not a trend, it is a technique that works. Coaching is about being, not performing. It is about being you, always. Coach walking creates a space for this in the simplest, yet most powerful way.

What is coach walking?

Coach walking is exactly what it sounds like, coaching while walking. It is not about taking a stroll for the sake of it, it is about removing distractions, creating movement, and shifting thinking.

The structure is simple. You ask a question, then you walk. The coachee answers in their own time, without the pressure of an immediate response, without digital interference, and outside of the space where the issue may have been created. It is coaching without the boardroom, without the desk, without the four walls that keep thinking trapped.

Why does this matter? Because the way people think is directly affected by their environment, movement, and sense of space. Coaching does not happen in isolation. It is not a static process. The best thinking happens when people are free to move through it.

Coach walking makes this possible.

Why coach walking works.

At and. we coach from a fundamental belief, coaching is about being. It is about finding clarity, navigating challenges, and understanding yourself in a way that is useful, practical, and real.

Coach walking supports this because it:

Removes distractions – no screens, no notifications, no interruptions
Creates a thinking space – no forced eye contact or desk barriers
Shifts perspective – movement shifts mindset
Encourages natural pacing – silence is not awkward, it is part of the process
Boosts energy – movement increases oxygen flow, and thinking becomes clearer
Prevents performance coaching – this is not about sitting across from someone and analyzing them, it is about walking alongside them

It is a power move because it removes the things that get in the way of coaching actually working.

Coach walking is self coaching too

For me personally, if you didn’t know its Debbie writing, COO, coach, creative, and doer at and. I do not walk with headphones anymore. I just walk.

Walking is my own form of self coaching. Be it trekking, hiking, strolling, or meandering, every step is an opportunity to think, process, and create. Some of my clearest thinking and most creative ideas happen while I’m coach walking. It is not just about coaching someone else, it is about coaching myself.

The difference? I listen. Fully.

No music, no podcasts, no outside noise. Just my thoughts, and the space to let them move. I allow my head to do its thing. I let it wander, let it connect dots, let it find clarity.

To make sure I capture the abstract thinking, I use voice notes. Not to force the process, but to allow myself to fully open up. I let my mind go where it needs to go, without worrying I will forget something important.

This is where the impact is.

Coaching isn’t just a conversation, it’s a process.

One that works whether you’re coaching someone else or coaching yourself.

The nlp connection

Coach walking is deeply connected to neuro linguistic programming (nlp) and the idea that environment affects mindset. When someone stays in the same space, they stay in the same thinking loops.

If you remove them from that space, you remove some of the blocks that come with it.

This is an nlp technique called pattern interrupt. It works because when you shift where you are, you shift how you think. Coach walking naturally taps into this. It removes the static nature of sitting and problem-solving, allowing the mind to move as the body moves.

And when movement happens, clarity follows.

Coach walking in action

Here is how coach walking works in the real world:

The leader who cannot make a decision

A senior leader is stuck. They have too much information and are circling the same pros and cons. A coach walking session removes them from the noise. No slides, no spreadsheets, no distractions. Just one question, then they walk. The decision comes faster, because there is space to think.

The team that is stuck in conflict

Two team members are in constant disagreement. Sitting across a table feels like a battle. But walking side by side shifts the dynamic. It becomes a conversation, not a confrontation. They focus on the problem, not each other. Resolution happens, because the energy changes.

The individual who does not have the words yet

Some coachees need longer to process. Sitting in a traditional session can make them feel pressured to respond. Coach walking removes this. The question lands, they take their time, and when they are ready, they answer. It works because the space to think is built into the process.

Coach walking is not a gimmick, it is a shift in the way coaching conversations work.

How to use coach walking

1. Choose the right space
Somewhere open, preferably outside. Nature is great, but even walking around a building works.

2. Ask the question, then walk
Do not rush the response. Do not force them to answer immediately. Let them walk with the thought first.

3. Embrace silence
Thinking takes time. Let them have that time without jumping in.

4. Match their pace
Literally and mentally. Coaching is not about rushing, it is about being with the coachee in their process.

5. Reflect on the movement
At the end of the session, ask, how did walking change your thinking? This helps coachees see the impact for themselves.

Why we coach walk at and.

We do not coach for performance, we coach for being. That means being you, always.

Coach walking is one of the most powerful ways to achieve this because it removes the unnecessary layers of structure, performance, and expectation that sit in traditional coaching sessions.

It is a simple move, but a game-changing shift.

If you have not tried it, walk with us.
